Nehemiah 7:1–7:4
A secured wall reveals an underpopulated city
Doors, singers, Levites, and two named commanders
When the wall is built and doors are set, gatekeepers, singers, and Levites are appointed. Nehemiah gives charge to Hanani his brother and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, a faithful man who fears God above many. The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot; men are to shut the doors and bar them, and watches are to be set from Jerusalem's inhabitants, every one in his watch and every one over against his house.
The city is wide, the people few, the houses unbuilt
The city is large and great, but the people are few therein, and the houses are not builded. A secured circuit now exposes an empty interior. Trust, worship roles, gate hours, and housing become the next problem.
Cautious gates are not a warrant for permanent emergency rule, and an underpopulated city is not proof that residents failed.
How this should shape us
Pair any security measure with housing, work, and a way to review who is trusted and why. A wall without dwellings is not yet a community.
