Dathan and Abiram Accuse Moses of Failed Liberation
Dathan and Abiram will not come up; they recast Egypt as the land of milk and honey
Moses sends to call Dathan and Abiram. They say, We will not come up. Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except you make yourself altogether a prince over us? Moreover you have not brought us into a land of milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.
Liberation is inverted: Egypt becomes the rich land, Moses the tyrant, failed delivery the proof. The Reubenite refusal is political and material, not an incense argument. Distorted memory does not make every leadership criticism false.
Moses asks not to respect their offering; then he and Aaron fall down for the assembly
Moses is very wroth and says to the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them. Integrity against embezzlement is his claim. It is not a substitute for independent financial review in a later institution.
He tells Korah that tomorrow they and Aaron will come before the LORD with censers, 250 fire pans. They stand at the door of the tent with Moses and Aaron, and Korah gathers all the congregation. The glory of the LORD appears. The LORD tells Moses and Aaron to separate from this congregation, that he may consume them in a moment. They fall on their faces: O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?
How this should shape us
Do not let a bitter faction rewrite bondage as plenty, and do not let a leader's anger settle an audit by itself. If destruction is aimed at a whole assembly for one man's sin, fall down with the intercessors. Criticism of failed promises still deserves a hearing that is not a loyalty test.
