Eleazar Orders Fire and Water Purification of Spoil
Eleazar tells the soldiers how spoil is to pass through fire and water
Eleazar the priest says to the men of war who went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses. Gold, silver, brass, iron, tin, and lead, whatever can abide fire, is to go through the fire and be clean, yet it is also to be purified with the water of separation. Whatever cannot abide fire is to go through the water.
Clothes are washed on the seventh day before reentry
On the seventh day they wash their clothes, and they are clean, and afterward they come into the camp.
Priestly instruction treats metals, cloth, and bodies after a war that produced corpses and captives. Fire and water are ritual routes back into camp. They are not modern disinfection, trauma care, or an ethical reset. Clean spoil is still spoil. The killings that produced it remain in the previous verses.
How this should shape us
Do not let a purification rule launder stolen goods or quiet what was done to the people those goods came from. Washing a garment does not repair a death, and a clean metal does not make a captive's life just.
