Moses Makes the Bargain Conditional and Public
Moses accepts only if they cross until the land is subdued
Moses says, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war, and go all armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward ye shall return and be guiltless before the LORD and before Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.
If they do not, sin will find them; they answer with children, cattle, and servants
But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth. The children of Gad and Reuben tell Moses, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth. Their little ones, wives, flocks, and all their cattle shall be there in the cities of Gilead. Their servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord says.
The agreement is conditional, public, and specific about duration. 'Your sin will find you out' here names a broken military pledge, not a theory that every later hardship exposes a hidden fault. The bargain is not a model for coercive contracts or sacred threats.
How this should shape us
Put conditions in speech both sides can repeat. Do not turn 'your sin will find you out' into a diagnosis of every misfortune. A public yes still needs room to protect dependents without being used as a holy threat.
