Numbers 32:28–33
Eleazar and Joshua Receive the Succession Terms
The terms are handed to the leaders who will outlive Moses
Moses commands Eleazar, Joshua, and the chief fathers of the tribes concerning them. If the children of Gad and Reuben pass over Jordan with you, every man armed to battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued, then give them the land of Gilead for a possession. If they will not pass over armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.
Half-Manasseh is added to Sihon's and Og's kingdoms
Gad and Reuben answer, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do. They will pass over armed before the LORD into Canaan, that the possession of their inheritance on this side Jordan may be theirs. Moses gives to them, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities and the cities of the country round about.
Succession receives a written condition, not a vague hope. A third group joins the eastern holding. Conquered kingdoms are not empty. The terms do not authorize modern borders, and they do not excuse later leaders who enforce a deal unevenly or forget what was actually promised.
How this should shape us
Write the handoff so the next priest and the next captain cannot invent the deal. Conditions that were spoken in public should be kept in public. Do not treat Sihon's and Og's kingdoms as unused land, and do not cite this assignment as a present map.
