Numbers 32:34–42
Eastern Tribes Rebuild, Rename, and Capture Towns
Gad and Reuben fortify towns and fold sheep
The children of Gad build Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, Atroth, Shophan, Jaazer, Jogbehah, Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fenced cities and folds for sheep. The children of Reuben build Heshbon, Elealeh, Kirjathaim, Nebo, Baal-meon (their names being changed), and Shibmah. They give other names to the cities they build.
Manassite clans capture and rename
The children of Machir son of Manasseh go to Gilead, take it, and dispossess the Amorite. Moses gives Gilead to Machir, and he dwells there. Jair the son of Manasseh takes the small towns and calls them Havoth-jair. Nobah takes Kenath and its villages and calls it Nobah, after his own name.
Building, renaming, and capturing turn the agreement into occupied ground. New names assert control over prior places. They do not erase the people displaced, prove an archaeological identity, or authorize colonial possession and self-commemoration.
How this should shape us
Notice who gets to rename a town. Construction on taken land is not proof of innocent origin. Do not baptize a man's name on a captured village, and do not use these lists as a colonial title search.
