Entry Requires Dispossession and Destruction of Cult Objects
In Moab the command is dispossession, smashed cult, and allotment
In the plains of Moab the LORD tells Moses to speak to Israel: when they pass over Jordan into Canaan, they are to drive out all the inhabitants, destroy all their pictures, destroy all their molten images, and pluck down all their high places. They are to dispossess the inhabitants and dwell in the land, for the LORD has given it. The land is to be divided by lot to tribes; to more, more; to fewer, less.
Whoever remains will be barbs, and Israel may receive its own judgment
If they will not drive out the inhabitants, those who remain shall be pricks in their eyes and thorns in their sides and shall vex them in the land wherein they dwell. Moreover, it shall come to pass that the LORD will do unto Israel as he thought to do unto them.
Cult destruction, removal of a population, and tribal allotment are one command here, closed by a warning that Israel itself can be judged as the Canaanites were to be judged. The command does not authorize ethnic cleansing, genocide, forced conversion, destruction of living religions, modern land seizure, or calling a present population a thorn to remove.
How this should shape us
Do not take a Moab-plain dispossession order into a modern city, shrine, or border. If the text warns that leftover inhabitants will vex, still refuse to label living neighbors a barb. The reciprocal threat is a limit on Israel, not a tool against someone else.
