Canaan's Idealized Boundaries and Tribal Allocation Are Named

South, west, north, and east are named for the western allotment

The LORD tells Moses to command Israel: this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, the land of Canaan with its coasts. The south quarter runs from the wilderness of Zin along Edom, from the salt sea, to the ascent of Akrabbim, Zin, Kadesh-barnea, Hazar-addar, Azmon, and the river of Egypt to the sea. The west is the great sea. The north runs from the great sea to mount Hor, to the entrance of Hamath, Zedad, Ziphron, and Hazar-enan. The east runs to Shepham, Riblah, the east side of Ain, down to the sea of Chinnereth eastward, and the Jordan to the salt sea.

Nine and a half tribes receive this map; two and a half already hold the east

This shall be the land, with the coasts thereof. Moses commands Israel: this is the land ye shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give to the nine tribes and to the half tribe. For the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond Jordan eastward, toward the sunrising.

The boundary speech is an idealized allotment for tribes not yet across the river. It does not settle present sovereignty, authorize displacement, erase people already living inside those lines, or serve as an archaeological deed.
