Philippians 2:12–18
Live Out God's Work Without Grumbling
God's inner work is why they work out salvation without grumbling.
Because God is at work in them to will and to act for his good pleasure, they are to work out their salvation with fear and trembling. Working out is living the rescue they already have; it is not earning it. Fear here is serious reverence, not terror used to control people.
They are to do everything without murmuring or arguing, so they shine as lights in a crooked generation, holding forth the word of life. Paul is glad even if his life is poured out on the sacrifice of their faith. The church's ungrumbling shine is part of how the gospel stays public.
How this should shape us
Do the next faithful act without the running complaint that makes a room smaller. Treat salvation as a life to live, not a wage to finish, and do not let anyone use fear-and-trembling talk as a tool of panic.

Best judgment: Publicly faithful adherence is certain. 'Holding forth' probably fits the shining image slightly better, but application should preserve both witness and perseverance without pretending the syntax is decisive.
