Psalms 33:1–22
Creator, ruler, and steadfast watcher
A new song for a word that made the heavens
Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous; praise befits the upright. Give thanks with the lyre; make melody with the harp of ten strings. Sing a new song; play skillfully with a shout.
The word of the LORD is upright; all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters as a heap and puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear; let the inhabitants stand in awe. He spoke, and it came to be.
Counsels of nations fail; a horse cannot save
The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing and frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen as his heritage.
The LORD looks from heaven and sees all. He who fashions the hearts of them all considers all their works. A king is not saved by a great army; a warrior is not delivered by great strength. The war horse is a false hope. The eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, who wait for his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits; he is our help and shield. Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Divine rule relativizes military inventory. It does not certify a modern state, and it does not make planning or protection faithless.
How this should shape us
Sing because the world is spoken, not because your side's strategy worked. Wait under the LORD's eye. Do not baptize a nation with 'blessed is the nation,' and do not trust the horse you can count.
