What was happening?
- The received Psalter contains older and later materials associated with diverse people, institutions, crises, and worship settings; no single historical moment explains all 150 psalms.
- Five books are marked by doxological closes at Psalms 41, 72, 89, 106, and the final praise of Psalm 150; editorial development and the precise purpose of every grouping remain debated.
- Superscriptions, liturgical terms, Hebrew and Greek numbering, and psalm pairs are ancient evidence but do not eliminate uncertainty about authorship, dating, performance, or original setting.
