Hearing Law Does Not Replace Doing What God Requires
Hearing law does not replace doing what God requires.
Those who sin without the law perish without the law; those who sin under the law are judged by the law. It is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers. Paul complicates Jew-Gentile stereotypes by describing Gentiles who do what the law requires, with conscience bearing witness and thoughts accusing or even excusing them on the day God judges secrets through Christ Jesus.
Conscience here is moral awareness that can accuse or defend; it is not a claim that every inner feeling is God's voice. Privilege of hearing Scripture is not immunity.
How this should shape us
Do not hide behind sermons you have heard while leaving undone the good you already know. Take conscience seriously as a witness, and do not baptize every impulse, anxiety, or preference as God speaking.
