Zechariah 8:18-23
Fasts Become Feasts as Nations Seek the LORD
The fasts become feasts, and nations take hold of a Jew's garment
The original question returns. The fast of the fourth month, the fifth, the seventh, and the tenth shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness and cheerful feasts. Therefore love the truth and peace. Mourning practices tied to Jerusalem's fall are transformed, not because trauma is fake, but because the LORD is turning the community's public calendar toward joy under the same ethical demand.
It shall yet come to pass that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities. They will invite one another to go and pray before the LORD. Many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem. Ten men from all languages of the nations shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
Outsiders are drawn alongside the Jewish community, not over it or instead of it
Ten men is a fullness image. A Jew names a Judean person without supplying later stereotypes. The nations perceive God's presence in a community shaped by truth and peace. They ask to go with that community. Gentile inclusion in the New Testament resonates here only if Christians refuse replacement theology, conversion pressure, and the fantasy that Jewish identity has become obsolete.
Transformed fasts do not require survivors to stop grieving on someone else's timetable. Taking hold of a garment does not authorize touching people without consent or treating Jews as spiritual tools. This is the invitational close of Zechariah 1-8, not a slogan for domination.
How this should shape us
Keep remembrance trauma-aware. Welcome outsiders through a life that is actually truthful and peaceable. Do not police another community's grief, and do not use Jewish people as a relic or a mascot.
