In brief

CrossFit is a named class culture of mixed lifts, timed metcons and a whiteboard, including seasonal Open workouts.

The common picture
WOD: workout of the dayA coach-led class mixes lifting and conditioning, often with a timer.
Named benchmarksFran, Murph, and friends — not every day.
The Open as a seasonA few weeks of posted workouts, not a lifestyle forever.
Not HYROXDifferent race, different stations.
Scaled: adjusted; Rx: prescribed workout as writtenThe accounts discuss changing load or movement to fit the participant.
Frequency in reports: 3–5 classes a weekMetcon means the conditioning portion; the examples commonly have one hard metcon per class.

People show up to a coach-led WOD, scale loads, log a time, and argue about volume, shoulders and how it differs from a race like HYROX.

Good to know. Ego loads on a tired metcon. Pain that is sharp, not sore. CrossFit is not HYROX and not Starting Strength.

What people say

  • The job: a mixed class with a clock and a whiteboard.
  • r/crossfit and box culture still exist next to HYROX’s 2026 boom.
  • Why people stay: community and ‘I don’t have to write the session.’
  • Why people leave: volume, random, or a shoulder that collected WODs.
  • Not 5/3/1. The bar program is a different card.
  • Murph is a named workout inside this culture, not a separate religion unless they make it one.

How people do it

  • Show up, scale, log the time.
  • They do not max a snatch the day they cannot overhead squat a stick.
  • Rest days still exist.

Amounts people use

  • 3–5 classes / week is common talk.
  • 1 hard metcon most class days, not three.

How people keep it

  • A box they can reach.
  • Scaling without a speech.

How it may feel

  • After a metcon: cooked, then social.
  • After a bad load: the shoulder writes the review.

How long

  • Seasons, or years if the box is the crew.

The longer notes

  • HYROX is the race card. This is the class culture.
  • PPL / 5/3/1 own linear lifting.

Good to know

  • Sharp pain, faint, chest: stop. A clinician.
  • Rx as identity is how shoulders collect.
Earlier wording (updated)
  • A class WOD Coach, clock, mix of lift and engine.
  • Scaling is the adult move Rx is not a moral rank.
