Hyaluronic acid
Also known as
HA · hyaluronan · sodium hyaluronate · oral HA · hyaluronic acid pills
Community talk. May be wrong. Not medical advice. Not a protocol. Not for human or animal use.
Pills go through the gut; the other HA jobs are a serum or a knee needle — don’t mix those stories.
One person reported no visible skin result; a different commenter reported benefits but wrote an ambiguous 200 ml unit.
High-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate for 12 weeks in 150 healthy adults; company-funded, many outcomes and no multiple-comparison correction.
Usually studied for four to twelve weeks; endpoints and molecular weights differed across studies.

Timing context & sources
Half-life in the body
A human intact-parent half-life after oral HA was not established in the checked evidence.
Animal radiolabel studies describe intestinal degradation, absorption and tissue distribution; injected or intra-articular clearance values concern different routes.
No human oral concentration-time curve for a defined intact molecular-weight species; radiolabel does not by itself prove intact polymer delivery.
- Kimura et al. — Absorption of orally administered hyaluronan (opens in a new tab)Abstract: intestinal degradation and distribution of radiolabeled high-molecular-weight HA-derived material to rat skin after oral administration.Animal radiolabel study; detected label and fragments do not establish a human intact-parent concentration-time curve.
- Fallacara et al. — Hyaluronic acid molecular mechanisms and therapeutic trajectory (opens in a new tab)Pharmacokinetic discussion distinguishes sparse animal and human data, oral radiolabel work, and rapid elimination measured after injected high-molecular-weight HA.Narrative review across molecular weights and routes; injection clearance must not be substituted for oral parent-polymer PK.
Felt duration people report
Reports range from changes after two to three weeks to no visible result after more than a year; the controlled skin signal was measured over one to three months.
One Reddit commenter used an ambiguous 200 ml unit. The trial tested 60 or 120 mg/day high-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate rather than ordinary capsules of unknown composition.
Self-reports lack verified products and baselines; the company-funded trial had multiple outcomes and does not establish what an individual should feel.
- r/SkincareAddiction — Oral hyaluronic acid experiences (opens in a new tab)Original question and visible replies: one-capsule/two-capsule benefit claim without a known milligram amount; 200 mg for over a year with no visible result; separate 43-year-old report wrote 200 ml and claimed changes after 2–3 weeks.Uncontrolled, unverified products and an apparent unit error; no same-product comparison or objective measurements.
- Dolečková et al. — Oral sodium hyaluronate randomized trial (opens in a new tab)Methods and results: 150 healthy adults randomized to 60 mg/day, 120 mg/day or placebo for 12 weeks; wrinkle-depth signal at one month and hydration/TEWL outcomes at three months; adverse events comparable across groups.Company-funded single-center trial, mostly company-employed authors, product-specific 1.8 MDa sodium hyaluronate, many outcomes and no multiplicity correction.
Other context in this card
- r/Sjogrens — HA supplement discussion (opens in a new tab)Visible same-author exchange states less joint pain and stiffness while taking capsules and more joint popping when doses are missed; product name given later but amount absent.Single report in a chronic-disease community; no amount, baseline, blinding or control for other care.
What people say
- Reddit joints: 120 mg pills, “subtle but noticeable.” Runners anecdotally less sore. anecdote
- Skin pantry: Stacked with collagen, C, astaxanthin. Credit is soup. forum
- Blueprint / Bryan Johnson 2026: r/blueprint_ noticed oral HA in the mix — 120 mg sodium hyaluronate is the number people repeat. Longevity-stack confound. forum
- Tret dryness experiment (2025): r/tretinoin asked if oral HA helps flake from retinoids. Some yes in winter; some “same as a daily vitamin — nothing.” Topical HA still the instant dew. forum
- Skin moisture (oral trials): 120–240 mg/day for ≥1 month associated with better dryness scores in adults. trial
- Wrinkle / elasticity (12-week-style orals): Some RCTs at ~120 mg/day in 35–64-year-olds. Subtle in the mirror. trial
- Knee OA adjunct: 80–200 mg/day oral bands for a couple of months in older-adult reviews. Not a cortisone shot. trial
- Injections: Separate medical procedure. Pairing oral + shots to stretch time-between-needles is a clinic conversation. trial
Doses people talk about
- Upper consumer band: 120–300 mg/day in 2026 supplement roundups. forum
- r/30PlusSkinCare example: 120 mg pills. anecdote
- Don’t copy intra-articular mg into a swallow. forum
- Outlier swallows: A 2026 climber log said 500 mg/day for skin+joints. That is not the 120–240 mg trial cluster. anecdote
- DIY meso HA is a fourth product. r/DIYmicroneedling 2026 lists Hyaron/BCN-class non-crosslinked HA for intradermal — not a Costco pill and not Restylane. forum
- Framing: Oral milligrams of HA — not syringe mL. forum
- Joint oral: 80–200 mg/day (200 mg is a common “I take this” Reddit number). trial
- Skin oral: 120–240 mg/day, often once daily, 4–12 weeks. trial
- 2025 60 vs 120 mg oral: Same 12-week RCT tested both; 120 mg was the stronger skin-signal arm. 60 mg is a lower band some bottles now match. trial
How it may feel
- Days 1–7: Pills do nothing dramatic. Serums are the immediate dew. forum
- If knees are locking: Imaging and a clinician, not another 200 mg. forum
- Weeks 2–4: Skin-trial window. trial
- Weeks 8–12: Joint and wrinkle study lengths. trial
- Year-ish: One OA oral 200 mg/day × 1 year reported no negative effects in that small paper — still not a safety bible. trial
Around the dose
- With collagen is the default beauty stack. forum
- Water / humidity still do more for “plump” than a 120 mg cap. forum
- MW on the COA if you care about the HMW/LMW fight. forum
- Clock: Once daily on most oral bottles. Serum is AM/PM skincare. Knee shots are months apart. forum
- Not a pin of the pill. Do not copy intra-articular milligrams or filler syringes into a swallow. forum
- Damp skin for serums: r/30PlusSkinCare still fights The Ordinary HA 2% in dry rooms — dew vs tight. Oral does not replace that. forum
- Collagen is the default stack and the confound. forum
Cycles people discuss
- Collagen stacks often run ongoing. Confounded. forum
- Daily for 8–12 weeks then decide. trial
- Injections are episodic, months apart — different product. trial
Timing
- Oral HA is digested/absorbed as fragments, not a 2 mDa chain teleporting to the cheek. forum
- Once daily on most bottles. forum
- Serum HA is topical dwell. forum
- Shot HA is the joint space. trial
More on what it is
- What it is: Sugar polymer the body already makes. Holds water. Pills, serums, and intra-articular shots are three different products. forum
- Why it’s on this map: Skin/joint biohack overlap with collagen and GHK, and it was still missing after the 2026-08-19 survivor list. forum
- Oral vs needle: r/30PlusSkinCare 120 mg pills — subtle joints. Knee injections are clinic viscosupplementation, not a Amazon bottle. forum
- MW fight: Reddit argues high-MW for hydration/joints, low-MW for wrinkles (and some say LMW is more inflammatory). Labels rarely prove MW. forum
- Not: Not filler, not a peptide, not a cartilage transplant. forum
- Four HA jobs, one name: Swallow a 120 mg cap, swipe a serum, get a knee needle, or get a lip filler. 2025–26 Reddit still mixes those stories. forum
- Human oral data exists: Skin-moisture studies around 120–240 mg/day for a month+; knee-pain adjuncts around 80–200 mg for ~8 weeks. Modest. trial
- 2025 oral RCT people paste: Dolečková et al., Sci Rep — 150 adults, 60 vs 120 mg/day high-MW sodium hyaluronate × 12 weeks vs placebo. 120 mg moved hydration/TEWL/wrinkle-depth more than 60 mg. Sponsor-affiliated authors; still a real RCT. trial

Access talk
- Drugstore pills vs clinic syringes vs cosmetic serum. Three shelves. Oral HA is a supplement; intra-articular HA is a procedure; filler is a device. forumtrial
- Not a July 2026 peptide PCAC story. No 503A fight. Identity is MW on the label and “is this even HA or a collagen blend.” forum
- US filler is FDA-cleared HA gels; US PN/PDRN injectables are not. Don’t let a “skin booster” menu mix those. trialforum
Storage notes
- Pills: Dry bottle. forum
- No mix instructions here: STUDresearch does not list injection reconstitution. forum
Watch for
- LMW vs HMW inflammation argument: Unsettled Reddit biochemistry. forum
- Allergy is uncommon because it’s endogenous, not zero. forum
- Don’t treat a locking knee with gummies. forum
- Filler ≠ booster ≠ pill. Cross-linked volume, non-crosslinked dew, and a 120 mg cap do not share a risk table. forum
- Not a peptide 503A story. Drugstore bottles and clinic syringes. forum
- Oral: Usually quiet. GI rare. trial
- Injection: Swelling, infection risk — clinic product. trial
- Research-only framing for this map: Discussion of community practice — not a recommendation to use. forum
