Lydia's household opens in Philippi
A working woman's household, not a later prison, first plants Philippi
The team reaches Philippi, a Roman colony. On the sabbath they go outside the gate to a riverside place of prayer and speak with the women gathered there. Lydia, a dealer in purple goods from Thyatira and a worshiper of God, listens. The Lord opens her heart to attend to Paul's words. She and her household are baptized. She then presses the missionaries: if you have judged me faithful to the Lord, come stay in my house.
Lydia is economically active and a household head whose agency bookends the Philippian story. The text does not name household members, their ages, or a formal office. Hospitality here is her initiative. It is not a romantic reading of wealth, and it is not proof of infant membership.
How this should shape us
Receive a working woman as a deciding host and participant. Respect household consent, and do not invent infant membership, a church office, or a romantic story about money the passage never supplies.
