Peter calls Israelite hearers toward promised restoration

Peter names ignorance, fulfillment, and a call to turn so that times of refreshing may come

He says he knows they acted in ignorance, as did their rulers. God fulfilled what he had shown by all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer. They are to repent and be converted, that sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord's presence, and that he may send the Christ appointed for them, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things spoken by the prophets.

Moses said a prophet like him would be raised; whoever will not hear that prophet will be destroyed from among the people. Samuel and those after him also announced these days. They are the children of the prophets and of the covenant God made with their fathers, saying to Abraham that in their seed all kindreds of the earth would be blessed. God, having raised his servant, sent him first to them to bless them in turning every one from iniquities. 'First' preserves Israel's priority; it does not cancel Israel. Ignorance mitigates neither all responsibility nor every actor equally.

Restoration language stays inside the promise to the fathers

The prophet like Moses and the restoration of all things have multiple interpretive horizons. None of them authorizes date-setting, and none of them makes the Gentile church Israel's replacement. The blessing is turning from evil, beginning with the people to whom the servant was sent first.
