Ecclesiastes 12:9-12
The Epilogue Commends and Bounds Wisdom
The preacher was wise, and of making many books there is no end
The epilogue says the preacher was wise, still taught the people knowledge, gave good heed, sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
Furthermore, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The frame commends Qoheleth's ordered words and then bounds endless study. It does not cancel the protests in the book, and it does not forbid learning.
How this should shape us
Receive goads that are true, and know when more books are only weariness. Do not use the epilogue to silence Qoheleth, and do not use Qoheleth to despise ordered teaching.
