Singer and Priest Chambers Face the Inner Court and Altar
Chambers of the singers face the inner court
Without the inner gate are the chambers of the singers in the inner court, which is at the side of the north gate, and their prospect is toward the south: one at the side of the east gate having the prospect toward the north.
He said, This chamber, whose prospect is toward the south, is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the house. The chamber whose prospect is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these are the sons of Zadok among the sons of Levi, which come near to the LORD to minister unto him.
A court foursquare, and the altar in it
He measures the court, an hundred cubits long and an hundred cubits broad, foursquare, and the altar that is before the house.
Singers and priests have rooms that look toward the court and the altar. Role is vocational in this vision, not a caste of worth, not ethnic superiority, and not a rule that women are barred from all worship leadership in later communities. The square court centers offering, not a throne of clergy.
How this should shape us
Honor song and altar-keeping as real work with rooms. Do not turn Zadok into a club that owns people, and do not use facing-chambers to shut women or anyone else out of a congregation's voice.
