Matthew 14:1–14:12
Herod kills John after a manipulated banquet oath
A banquet oath that costs a prophet
Herod hears of Jesus and remembers John. He had imprisoned John because John named the unlawfulness of taking Herodias. At a birthday banquet, after a dance, Herod makes a public promise. Herodias uses the opening. The girl, unnamed here, is sent into adult power. An executioner beheads John in prison. Disciples bury the body and go tell Jesus.
Agency is spread across Herod, Herodias, guests, honor culture, and the executioner. The girl is not the author of the killing. Later telling must not sexualize her, blame her for adult appetite, or turn the dance into a morality play about female bodies. The crime is a ruler protecting face.
How this should shape us
Public promises made to look generous can become weapons. Do not let honor, applause, or a spouse's grievance decide someone else's life. Protect the unnamed young person in any room of powerful adults. Grieve prophets who die for telling the truth, and do not dress the death as fate.
