Aaron's Garments Pass to Eleazar before Aaron Dies
Aaron will not enter because of Meribah
The congregation journeys from Kadesh to Mount Hor. There the LORD tells Moses and Aaron that Aaron will be gathered to his people, because he will not enter the land, for he rebelled against the LORD's word at the water of Meribah. The same bar that fell on both brothers now becomes Aaron's death sentence in this place.
Garments move to Eleazar, then the congregation mourns
Moses is to take Aaron and Eleazar up the mount. Aaron's garments are stripped off and put on Eleazar his son. Aaron dies there on the top of the mount. Moses and Eleazar come down. When the congregation sees that Aaron is dead, they mourn thirty days, even the whole house of Israel.
Priesthood continues by a public transfer before death, not by a silent family seizure. The people are given a month to grieve. Aaron's earlier failures are not erased by the mourning, and the mourning is not cancelled by the failures. A leader's death here is tied to Meribah; it is not a template for reading every later death as punishment.
How this should shape us
Plan succession in the open, and let a community grieve a leader without being told to hurry on. Do not treat an inherited office as a family entitlement, and do not use one death to explain someone else's.
