Acts 14:1–14:7
Iconium divides over prolonged witness
Iconium believes and plots across synagogue and city until the team flees
It comes to pass in Iconium that they go both together into the synagogue of the Jews and so speak that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believe. But the unbelieving Jews stir up the Gentiles and make their minds evil affected against the brethren. Long time therefore they abide, speaking boldly in the Lord, which gives testimony unto the word of his grace, and grants signs and wonders to be done by their hands. The multitude of the city is divided: part hold with the Jews, and part with the apostles. When there is an assault made both of the Gentiles and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully and to stone them, they are ware of it and flee unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about, and there they preach the gospel.
Acts distinguishes believing and opposing members of both communities. "The Jews" in this scene cannot mean every Jew, including the Jewish missionaries and the Jewish believers. Signs confirm the word of grace; they are not a medical program and not a reason to stay and be stoned when a plot is known. Flight to Lycaonia continues the same gospel.
How this should shape us
Stay while speech can still be bold and honest, and leave when a mixed plot turns toward stoning. Do not let the phrase "the Jews" swallow Jewish believers or Jewish missionaries, and do not treat signs as a command to ignore a real threat.
